The General Dennis L. Via Airborne Signal Chapter

Focused on the Future

The Airborne Signal Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division Association, officially chartered in 2018, is the dedicated organization that supports and preserves the legacy of the Signal Corps community within the All-American Division. Known formally as The General Dennis L. Via All Airborne Signal Chapter, it connects veterans, active members, and their families to foster camaraderie, education, and recognition.

Chapter History and Namesake

The Chapter’s founding in 2018 established a formal organization to support the Airborne Signal community. It was named to honor General (Ret) Dennis L. Via, a highly distinguished Signal Corps officer who served as the Commander of the 82nd Signal Battalion from 1996 to 1998. The General is celebrated as the first commissioned Signal Corps officer in U.S. Army history to achieve the rank of four-star General, setting an inspiring and aspirational standard for all members of the Chapter.

The Historical Program and Member Authors

The Historical Program is a cornerstone of the Chapter’s mission, dedicated to preserving the story of the Airborne Signal community's service across all conflicts since WWI and WWII. A significant aspect of this program is celebrating the contributions of its members who have dedicated themselves to documenting this rich history:

  • Documenting the Legacy: Three prominent Chapter members have authored books focused on the history of the 82nd Signal Battalion and the 82nd Airborne Division, providing invaluable firsthand accounts and research:

    • 1SG (retired) Christopher Eric (Moon) Mullins

    • LTC (retired) Ben Powers

    • CW4 (Retired) Pete Hill

This effort ensures that the service and sacrifices of Airborne Signaleers are formally recognized and passed down through published works to future generations.

Core Programs and Initiatives

Since its charter, the Chapter has prioritized several key initiatives to support its membership and maintain strong ties to the wider Airborne community:

  • Annual Events: The Chapter plays an active role in two major annual gatherings:

    • All American Week (at Fort Liberty, N.C., formerly Fort Bragg)

    • The Association Annual Convention These events provide critical opportunities for networking, honoring current service members, and conducting chapter business.

  • Health and Welfare Outreach: A crucial program dedicated to staying in touch with veterans and ensuring the well-being of its members through proactive outreach and support.

  • Scholarship Program: This program is central to the Chapter's mission, providing financial assistance to members and their dependents to support their pursuit of higher education.

  • Signal Six Award: Established to recognize excellence within the Chapter, this "Exceptional Member Award" is presented annually during All American Week to a member who has demonstrated significant and enduring contributions to the organization and its mission.

  • Engagement and Communication: The Chapter leadership manages member communication through publications like "The Commander’s Voice" and coordinates events via the Chapter Calendar, ensuring the community remains connected and informed about Chapter and unit activities.

Through these focused programs and engagement efforts, the Chapter, chartered in 2018, is dedicated to upholding the values of the Airborne Signal community and investing in its future.
